In that OTHER war, Saudi Arabia/GCC keep getting pounded...
Story here.
The only thing that really stood out is the fact that the article mentions Coalition soldiers AND mercenaries.
I haven't seen any posting from Triple Canopy for activity in that area....I'll look again at all the players to see if they have listings.
Saudi Prince flees after posting bond for rape...predictable...
Thanks to NO for the link!
via Women's Weekly...
Want my cynical thoughts on this? I'd almost bet that law enforcement was aware of the likely hood of the "prince" fleeing but behind the scenes a deal has been worked out between the Saudi govt and the victims so that they'll be compensated "monetarily" for their pain and suffering. Want even more cyncism? The women will gladly accept, they'll refuse news interviews and this will quickly be forgotten.

A Saudi prince accused of raping several women during a wild party at a Beverly Hills mansion has apparently fled the country, after being told that he would not receive diplomatic immunity against any alleged crimes. This was a no-brainer and the fix was in as soon as the judge allowed bail for such a heinous crime.
The LA Times reports Majed Abdulaziz Al-Saud, 29, was arrested earlier his week on suspicion of "forced oral copulation".
The charges were laid after police were called to the compound after neighbours saw a bleeding woman trying to scale a fence to get out during a "wild party" at the Prince’s compound.
Several other women then came forward to say they, too, had been raped at the $37 million mansion being rented by the prince.
Neighbours told reporters the Prince had fled in a private jet. He's due to face court on October 19.

Turkey attacks Kurdish city...is the alliance fracturing?
via RT...
The brilliance of Putin's move into Syria should be obvious by now. Not only is he helping prop up an ally, he's also driving wedges between allies.
Exhibit number 1....The Kurd problem.
The US can't be seen as abandoning them because we will be considered unreliable by the entire region (if we aren't already)...Turkey considers the PKK a terrorist organization and have started using heavy handed tactics against the entire Kurdish population.
So what do we have? We have allies operating at cross purpose with different goals and agendas.
We have a mess. Quite honestly the Pentagon, State Dept and Administration are focusing on the Russian action for one simple reason.
Its the easiest to deal with.
But even if the Russians pulled out tomorrow, the mess would remain. The fight against ISIS can't succeed because no one is taking that fight seriously. Assad is more focused on the rebels in his country (and ISIS just joined the furball). Iraq is focused on the Shia-Sunni sectarian strife (which ISIS is a part of). Jordan just wants it all to go away. Turkey we've covered. Saudi Arabia/GCC want Yemen pacified so they don't have an Iranian sponsored threat on their borders.
Only the US is even thinking about ISIS...and with all the drama in the region, I wonder if we're tackling the most important problem.
At least 17 members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have been killed in a Turkish military assault on the city of Silvan, which has a mainly Kurdish population, reports say.Here.
The Istanbul police department together with teams from the anti-terrorism branch launched the operation at 05:00 local time (02:00GMT), Dogan News Agency said.

Is the Army playing games with the Stryker upgrade?
Thanks to Lee for the link!
via Defense News.
Wow. Is this an "urgent need" or simply a money grab? At that price point they could almost buy new vehicles (or at least get close to it). Additionally is the Army signalling the RWS they're aiming to buy? Having to redesign the roof to handle additional weight seems like they're going for one of the "heavier" options out there...like the one pictured above.
I don't know what's going on in Army land but this just doesn't smell right.
via Defense News.
Then there’s the cost, “which the Army has informed the defense committees may be approximately $4.5 million per vehicle,” the conference report continues. Part of the problem is you can’t just slap a bigger gun atop the Stryker and call it a day: The 30 mm cannon and its ammunition are much heavier than the current 12.7 mm machingun, requiring a redesign of the roof. But part of the problem, the conference report argues, is that the Army plans to build the new guns — and the new superstructure to support them — onto disused Stryker chassis that were mothballed after Strykers were converted to roadside-bomb-resistant Double-V Hulls (DVH). “This approach appears to add significantly to the unit cost,” say the skeptical conferees.Here.

Russia in Syria...a "partial" order of battle....
via Sputnik...
"More than 50 warplanes and helicopters are part of the Russian air force striking Islamic State targets in Syria," Konashenkov said Thursday.Interesting.
He also stressed that marines, paratroopers, and special forces will be mobilized to protect Moscow’s military assets.
He stressed that Marines, paratrooper and Special Ops would be used in a force protection role? I guess the Russians took the lesson of Camp Bastion to heart.
Just going by the numbers and the type of aircraft involved the closest thing that the US has assembled that remotely resembles what the Russians have put on the ground is the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing (with the caveat that the wing was all USAF while the Russians have put forward a joint force).
What I find curious is that we don't have numbers on ground forces. Except for a piece earlier that talked about the 801st Marine Brigade deploying to Syria thru social media, I haven't a clue as to what paratroop unit or Special Ops forces have deployed (they really cracked down hard on social media...I've been looking to see what some Russian Marine posted on Facebook but no luck).
Hopefully we'll get a better idea of the units and their performance in the coming days.
F-35 News. S. Korea investigates defense officials over F-35 deal...corruption suspected!
via Korean Times...
National Security Office (NSO) chief Kim Kwan-jin may face an investigation over his role in the controversial decision to buy F-35 stealth fighters from Lockheed Martin. And so it begins. You can expect other national law enforcement agencies in other nations to at least monitor this situation, if not start investigations of their own.
Kim headed a panel that selected F-35s over Boeing's F15-SEs as a defense minister in March last year.
The office of the senior presidential secretary for civil affairs began its probe last week amid growing allegations that the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) lied about the terms of the contract in order to help Lockheed win the bid.
The agency admitted that it failed to receive four core F-35-related technologies from Lockheed, and this is expected to cause a setback for the nation's 8.5 trillion won KF-X project to develop indigenous fighter jets by 2025.
Kim served as defense minister from December 2012 to June last year. He also headed the Defense Acquisition Program Executive Committee that chose F-35 stealth fighters under the foreign military sales (FMS) format covered by guarantees from the U.S. government.
Controversy erupted following the decision to go with Lockheed because the decision came after the committee rejected Boeing's F-15SE, first recommended by DAPA in September 2013.
DAPA officials noted that the decision to reject the F-15SE was unexpected as Boeing was more positive in handing over core technologies.
More to come I'm sure.
Russian piloted, SU-25 shotdown in Syria? Russian MoD refuses comment???
Thanks to Galvars for the link!
Story here.
If this is true then things went sideways quickly. Do the Russians have a robust Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel (TRAP) team in place? If not then we can expect the worst on YouTube in the very near future (assuming the pilot was captured alive).

2.75 laser guided rockets. The revolution is being ignored...
What happens when you have a rocket that is capable of precision fire? Add to it the ability to AFFORDABLY destroy armored vehicles, shred troops in the open and basically take out anything short of a Main Battle Tank?
You have a revolution that many aren't tuned into. You have a revolution that is being ignored.
Maybe its tight budgets. Maybe its a lack of imagination on the part of manufacturers and the military but Lockheed Martin hit on something then stupidly turned it loose when they demonstrated a 2.75 guided missile setup on both their JLTV and Amphibious Combat Vehicle contenders.
This could bring the missile truck to ground combat element and achieve what was always promised. A multi-mission vehicle that can take on a wide variety of targets with a huge "ready" load.
USAID! Uh guys...I think we have a problem...

Let me repeat. Simply divide the battlespace. Russia handles everything in Syria, the US and West handle Iraq and everyone reinforces the Kurds.
ISIS problem solved, we negotiate over Assad and we protect the Kurds from a batshit crazy Turkish administration (not the people, the people are kool...plus they have some hot women).

A photo circulating that purports to show Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) linked Commander Muhajireen Kavkaz wa Sham inside a USAID tent.Here.
If this image is real, then it confirms the worst fears about U.S. aid to Syria falling into the hands of terrorists.
Recent images from the front line of the Syrian war suggest that terrorists are enjoying the small comforts of U.S. equipment and supplies that are meant to aide legitimate rebels, who are part of the Free Syrian Army. This appears to prove all the concerns among U.S. lawmakers and analysts that aid to the Syrian rebels could end up in the hands of Al Qaeda.
The photograph allegedly shows Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) linked Commander Muhajireen Kavkaz wa Sham, along with other rebels dawning battle-gear and an RPG, inside a USAID tent.
The terror group is known inside Syria by its acronym, ISIS. It is an Al Qaeda-linked jihad organization and recently it announced a campaign of “cleansing evil” at pro-Western opposition groups inside Syria.
The authenticity and location of this photo obtained by TheBlaze, which is circulating on the web, has not been officially confirmed. U.S. officials, however, told TheBlaze that this rebel commander is believed to be in Syria at this time.
