Forget the military aspects of this thing.

The biggest threat to the Ukrainians is that more Americans will become aware of the massive amount of aid that we're providing.

Not only military aid but the ECONOMIC assistance to keep their govt afloat (ie...to pay the salaries of millionaires who steal that aid to fill their own bank accounts).

The sad truth?

Doesn't matter who wins the war now.  Ukraine is a battered and broken country that will not recover till at least 2050 at best.

Europe has a failed state in its center.

Those calling for diplomacy (like me!) are looking into the near future and see continued chaos after all this is over.  Want to talk about crime?  The fuel for the crime is being sent on a daily basis to Ukraine (money and weapons).  Want to know where the next mega terrorist attack is being fueled?  Yeah Ukraine.  Wonder how many terrorists will sit at the end of a runway and take shots at airliners with missing manpads.  Want to see the destruction and devastation when a few missing anti-tank missile systems are used on govt buildings thru out Europe!

The pain and misery is contained.

The seeds for the pain and misery to spread are being planted right now.

This is just a layman's view.

The view of a guy that's always rode in the back and never had comms on or manned a machine gun.  PURE passenger!

But one thing I've noticed at least from this fight on both sides (and a few times from stuff in Iraq), is that helicopter pilots seem to have a delayed reaction to their aircraft being hit.

Once again, this is a layman's view, but it would seem appropriate to land that thing as fast as possible so that everyone can live.

Fast jet pilots will punch out in seconds (yeah they have ejection seats but big jet pilots seek to get down as fast as possible too), so with a vehicle that can land vertically I don't get the delay.

Can anyone explain it?

It's got to be more than hubris and pilots thinking they can fix the problem or "ride it out".  I refuse to believe that's the reason so what is it?

 A reader of the blog (Gessler) put forward an intriguing idea.  A "what if" that is so mind blowing that it has to be discussed.

Spare me the usual "ain't gonna happen" that alot of people spout almost reflexively, and dig into the thinking behind it.

...just as a thought exercise: toward end of this decade, how likely do you guys think it is that Germany could decide to ditch NATO and get into an alliance with Russia & China? Russia for energy, China for market access. This would of course leave them with no security cover from NATO/US which means that if the future German leadership (in no small part influenced by the huge industrial concerns which have a lot to lose if cheap energy & the Chinese market is no longer available) decides in favour of such a geopolitical realignment, German re-armament would become an inevitability.

Looking at the recent pace of arms buildup by countries like Poland I can't help but think its not just Russia they are concerned about. I think the Polish already have an appreciation of the economic & geopolitical pressures that will befall Germany in the near future, and are preparing for a worst case scenario as to what the German leadership could decide to do in response to said pressures. I think the powers that be are already seeing the pieces on the chessboard have started to move.

By the way, Poland has recently officially demanded $1.3 trillion reparations from Germany for WW2.

Much ignored in the US, but Germany has been bullying its neighbors for at least a couple of decades and many (especially in the South) are more than a bit pissed.

Another issue is that the Poles are gearing up for a major land action.  It's the only thing that explains their massive buildup.

Another reader (forgot his name...sorry bro) speculated that we would see Ukraine fractured into many pieces with Poland controlling the area near their border (from what I've been told, many Ukrainians already work in their country) with Russia basically keeping what it has and the rest administrated by the EU/US.

That sounds about right to me.

Under those circumstances with markets dried up in the EU, friction with its most powerful rival (Poland) and everyone looking out for themselves is it outside the realm of possibilities for Germany to go its own way with regard to its economic interests? 

Nations make demands that others must satisfy...

Can it happen without US participation?

Kinda interested in seeing how the European nations get it done. But that won't happen.  I'm sure it'll fall to Turkey to do the heavy lifting and you'll see a few token forces from the rest of the EU (assuming this is a European led operation).

Note. Not many are talking about it but when we see more and more suicide drones (loitering munitions) will we see the practical end of cannon artillery? Even self propelled gun like the K9 will be vulnerable. Just a thought so we'll see, but If the cost is right and we're seeing one loitering munition knocking out mobile guns and their crews then the cost - risk equation will swing heavily toward loitering munitions. Just a thought, but if its correct then gun bunnies will give way to an all missile force (with the same vulnerabilities but probably further away from the lines..). The more I think about it the more I think we're headed toward robot forces. The battlefield of the future will just be too lethal for humans...wouldn't that be a kick in the ass...the only servicemembers in the future will be techs maintaining robots.
