Amphibious Combat Vehicle Request for Information.

Amos ran out the clock.

He delayed the ACV/MPC/AAV Upgrade long enough so that any funds that would have been directed towards those programs instead got sent to support the F-35.

I really believe that the Marine Corps is just yanking industry's chain.

2010-2011 Decisive years for Marine Corps procurement.

....the program is not affordable given likely Marine Corps procurement budgets. The procurement and operations/maintenance costs of this vehicle are onerous.James F. Amos, 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps

You would think that the above statement applied to the F-35....and it does.  But in this case Amos was talking about the EFV.

2010-2011 were decisive years for the Marine Corps.

But lets play a game and imagine what the Marine Corps would look like today...if Gates did more than play lip service to procurement reform by whacking a few US Army and Marine Corps programs.  What would the Marine Corps look like if the F-35 was canned too.

We would have the EFV...simplified.
If the F-35 was canned along with the EFV, I believe the Marine Corps would have accepted a proposal by General Dynamics to build a simplified version of the EFV.  It would not be a planning vehicle but its mobility and protection on land would have been top notch.

We would be cutting far fewer Infantry Battalions.
The Marine Corps provides 1/3 (I believe don't quote me on that...the number is impressive) of the nations ground combat power.  In particular it provides formidable infantry.  Today we're cutting Infantry Battalions at an alarming rate, while expecting Companies to do their job.  Thank you F-35.

We would be flying F/A-18E/F/G's.
We would have immediately flexed into the Super Hornet as an interim  jet bringing the cost of that airplane down even more, giving us an electronic attack option (a supreme option and possible game changer) and provide seamless integration with Navy Carrier Air Wings.

Options for a tilt wing gunship would have been fully explored.
I dislike the MV-22 for its cost.  Planners should dislike it because its jumbling the escort package for it.  It flies too fast to be escorted by the AH-1Z, yet its not quite fast enough to cruise comfortably with Harriers (this is guesswork on my part....I could be wrong but don't think so).  Bell Helicopters BAT, work they did for the US Army's light helicopter program, would have gotten a second look and would have (if adopted) lessened the need for a STOVL jet fighter.

Summation.
2010-2011 was a year of decision for the Marine Corps and instead of doing the hard thing and re-evaluating where we were going with procurement we pushed ahead.

...Hey diddle straight up the middle, hey diddle straight up the middle....

F-35 News. The Australian announcement is NOT news.

I've been getting bombarded with news that the Australian government announced that they're buying 58 F-35's.

My reaction?

So fucking what!  This isn't news!  Its just them fulfilling their planned buy of the airplanes.  If you want to really talk about the F-35 then Canada will grab your attention.  Italy will be on your mind.  The cut by the Netherlands will shock your system.

The Program Manager for this airplane has stated himself that additional foreign orders are needed to push the price down.

Don't expect them.

The program doesn't have anymore bribes production contracts to award to new partners.  The death spiral is here F-35 supporters.  Deal with it bitches.

Tony Blair was a true believer in the war on terror.

Blair makes a great case for his position.

But quite honestly I don't care.

If Muslims want to burn down their countries in the Middle East and Africa then so be it.  If they want to cut themselves out of globalization, or modernization of their cultures ... then fine.  Do what you want.

When do we stop fighting for people that won't fight for themselves?  Time for the people of those countries to put down their homegrown mad dog killers.

The Heritage Foundation steps into the Marine Corps AAV replacement debate...and they're wrong.

Support Needed
Moving forward, the Corps is reliant on the Navy and Congress to make this plan effective:
**The U.S. Navy should support with “connector” capabilities. The decision to go with a wheeled amphibious vehicle relies heavily on the development of a future ship-to-shore connector. Since the procurement and maintenance of these capabilities are all under the purview of the Navy, any change in requirement for the connector needs the Navy’s support.
**Congress should adequately fund defense. In making this decision, the Marine Corps was already cost conscious. However a return to sequestration levels would put the future of many investment programs in jeopardy. The initial phase of the Corps’s vehicle strategy has been crafted to fit within current budget request levels, but additional funding will be required for the new ship-to-shore connector(s).The Right Decision
**The proposed plan is the appropriate path forward for modernizing amphibious operations capabilities. By embracing a phased approach, the USMC can capitalize on current technology to quickly replace aging equipment while freeing funding to invest in a robust R&D effort, effectively creating a bridging strategy that maintains its current utility as a forward-deployed force while preparing it for the future.
Furthermore, the decision to purchase a MPC-type vehicle and leverage modern ship-to-shore connectors is an effective recognition of the evolving threat and operational environments.
Read the whole thing here.

My opinion?  Heritage is as wrong as two left feet.  If anything a wait and see position should be adopted.

The current Commandant fiddled, was indecisive, and generally absent on this issue and now with 6 months left on his tenure we're suppose to get excited and go forward at 900 miles per hour to implement his plan?

I don't fucking think so.

Additionally, I'm not forgetting about Dakota Woods.  Personally I like the guy (met him once, but since I'm unremarkable I'm sure he doesn't know me from Adam) but I also know that his idea of a "Commando Corps" was the first building block of Expeditionary Force 21 that we're seeing pushed by the current cabal at HQMC.

We've waited more than 4 years for HQMC to move on the AAV replacement.  Waiting 6 more months for a proper Commandant to make a decision on the matter won't hurt us.

22nd MEU AAVs in action.... Photos by Lance Cpl. Caleb McDonald

U.S. Marine Corps assault amphibious vehicles with Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), come ashore during an amphibious landing as part of a U.S.-French bilateral exercise. The exercise is designed to improve interoperability between nations, increase readiness and develop professional relationships. The 22nd MEU is deployed with the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group as a theater reserve and crisis response force throughout U.S. Central Command and the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

Are we seeing a global rebellion against governments?

Thanks Bruno for sending me this link!

I'm not going to spoil this by posting pictures here but you must see this story about Chinese people reacting to government abuses against them.  As usual, LEOs are the strong arm of the state and they pay the price.

Read the story here.

Bigger question.  We've seen rioting in S. Europe, throughout the Middle East, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and we've seen the recent incident in Bundy, Nevada.

Something is going on worldwide.  I thought that it had to do with economics but now I'm not so sure.  I still believe the economy is part of it, but something much larger is also happening.

Stay tuned.

Blast from the past. The Battle of Long Tang (Vietnam 1966)

Wikipedia entry on the Battle of Long Tang.

The Situation
A company of Australian Soldiers from Delta Company, 6 Royal Australian Army and Viet Cong/North Vietnamese Army units met in a meeting engagement.

Unit Strength
NVA/Viet Cong forces are estimated to have numbered almost 2500 men versus an Australian force of 108

The Outcome
The Australian Army was hardened bush fighters that were extremely comfortable in the jungle environment.  Additionally they were seasoned in the type of "fighting style" employed by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese. Allied forces do not have the same level of comfort in this environment today.  The Aussies carried the day but the warning is clear to all that want to see.  Small units (company sized) are vulnerable to being fixed in place and destroyed.

NOTE:  The video starts slow but then zooms along at a breathless pace.  The radio calls, the call for fires, the description of the battle by the men that were there.  ABSOLUTELY AWESOME VID!  MUST WATCH!

NOTE 1:  I'm really interested to find out how the Australian Army views the decisions of the Battalion Commander in this battle.

David Codrea on the Bundy Ranch Incident.

Note:  David Codrea is a long-time gun rights advocate who defiantly challenges the folly of citizen disarmament. He is a field editor for GUNS Magazine, and a blogger at The War on Guns: Notes from the Resistance.

Note 1:  I've been speculating that the Feds had all manner of surveillance going on at the Bundy Ranch and that they would let everything die down and we'd wake up in a year or so to news of mass raids throughout the country happening simultaneously.

Note 2:  We've been hearing Sen Reid first make the statement that this isn't over and then second that the people that showed up to the Bundy Ranch were domestic terrorist....which brings me to this story from the Examiner...
Putting aside reader opposition to or support for the Bundy claims, and ignoring allegations of Reid’s (and his son Rory’s) personal interests in the disposition of the land in question, what must be examined is what the senator must mean if he seriously believes his accusation.
“Domestic terrorism” is a legal term, defined by U.S. Code. It’s prosecutable. Assets can be seized, including assets of supporters. Provisions of the Patriot Act could kick in, with all that implies. And felony convictions would certainly result in those found guilty becoming “prohibited persons” under federal law from owning a gun.
Assuming PR considerations would preclude Obama from ordering drone strikes, is the foregoing really what Harry Reid has in mind? In spite of the efforts of Oath Keepers and others to ensure that a peaceful resolution is paramount, does “true champion of the Second Amendment” Harry Reid want everyone on the side of the Bundy family who has been on the ground near Bunkerville -- and those providing them with material support -- to be prosecuted as domestic terrorists?
Does he truly wish for those whom he politically disagrees with to forever lose federal recognition of their right to keep and bear arms?
Considering his longtime gravitation toward Michael Bloomberg, his support for federal oversight of private gun sales, and his embracing of Diane Feinstein’s renewed “assault weapon” ban, such an admission would hardly be surprising.
Quite honestly this surprises me and takes me to a place I hadn't considered.

I was mostly looking at the guys on the overpass that pointed weapons at LEOs as being the targets of my mythical raids in the future.  If the term "Domestic Terrorist" can actually be applied to the participants at the incident then you're looking at an escalation in this brewing battle.

It leads to questions though.

1.  If you simply protest against a police action is that now terrorism?
2.  If you're armed on private property during a police action and DO NOT point your weapon at police but vocally state your opposition to them does that count as interference with police in them doing their work?
3.  Will the guy on the overpass be charged with Domestic Terrorism as well as assault?

This is gonna get sticky and messy.

Seems like both sides want a fight and are bound and determined to get one.

SLDInfo. War is declared.

Much to many people's surprise, I like to think of myself as a calm, rationale individual that's slow to anger (ok...that last bit is a lie but you get the idea) but SLDInfo is really starting to piss me off.

Earlier I posted a story about how they're throwing bullshit against the wall to see what sticks with their constant cheer-leading for the F-35.  What happens next?  I'm looking through my RSS feed and I see this post....
The F-35s went in and provided the capability to eliminate the ground missile threats and allowed a distributed company to be inserted to do their job. In other words, the Osprey carried the force; the F-35 surrogate providing the cover which could insert the force more effectively. Such an approach has NOTHING to do with the classic thinking of how a rotorcraft force would approach the challenge of ground force insertion into air enabled contested areas.
What the fuck?

Such an approach has nothing to do with yada yada yada bullshit bullshit bullshit?!

Ok boys.  You just picked the wrong jarhead to bump heads with....Not only are you full of it but your statements make no sense.  How are you going to approach the challenge of ground force insertion into air enabled contested areas with rotary winged aircraft you idiots!  The MV-22 has already shown us that it can't do it!  Ask the SEALs.  Ask Air Force Special Ops!  The days of rotary winged penetration aircraft ended with the retirement of the MH-53J from USAF service.

The idea that a Company Landing Team is going to insert into a location that is protected by anti-air missiles (fixed or mobile, it doesn't matter) and somehow be combat capable boggles the mind.

You are setting up future Marines to be slaughtered.  100 Marines with standard combat loadouts would be good for one, maybe two firefights before they needed resupply.  At this time the enemy would be alerted and would be sending every available body to the fight.  Do we really want a Marine Corps "Osprey Down" in some third world country?

What's missing in the Stryker Family of Vehicles?

The year is 2020.

Tensions between China and Japan have intensified to the breaking point and all eyes are on the disputed islands.  Meanwhile Russia, seeing a chance to expand its territory AND gain access to rare earth minerals makes a quick move to Central Africa.

They moved a couple of Airborne Brigades and two Naval Infantry Brigades to the region before the intel community knew what was what.

The US Army responds by sending a Stryker Brigade (reinf) with a Brigade from the 82nd.  SOCOM is supporting.

Sounds like a solid plan.

Except for the fact that as well thought out as the Stryker Brigade Family of Vehicles is, they did not include an Anti-Air variant.

Russian SU-25's, SU-30's and PAK-FA's are rampaging all over while the few USAF F-35's dedicated to the effort are having trouble staying in the air after the 1st week of operations.

The above is just a rough and dirty fictional account of future warfare but not having a dedicated anti-air platform is a big miss that both the USMC and US Army needs to correct.

PS.  Something with more range than a ground launched Sidewinder too!  Long range attack against ground targets is now the norm.  As things currently stand if the enemy is able to gain local air superiority over any of our formations then we're filling body bags and not able to even defend ourselves.

F-35 News. Program Manager admits death spiral all but here...

via National Defense Magazine.
Anytime anyone moves airplanes to the right, the price goes up.”
The surest way to lower cost, he said, is to bring in more foreign buyers into the program. The SAR estimates, he noted, do not include a possible order of 40 F-35s by South Korea, or anticipated future purchases by Singapore and Israel.
We are pretty sure that Israel is not going to stop at 19,” Bogdan said. Another potential customer is Japan, which has a fleet of about 200 F-15s, half of which have been modernized. “At some point they will have to make a choice,” he said. “I can't influence that decision, other than keep driving the price of the airplane down. Then these FMS [foreign military sales] customers will make choices.”
Today, about 30 percent of F-35 components are made outside the United States, which exposes U.S. aircraft buys to fluctuations in foreign currency rates.
Bogdan insisted that the impact of budget cuts by the United States and other F-35 buying nations on aircraft cost projections should not be underestimated. In the Pentagon’s fiscal year 2015 budget proposal, the Navy delayed purchases of 33 aircraft and the Air Force postponed four. Turkey and Canada slipped their buys by one year, and the Netherlands slashed its order from 80 to 37. The cumulative effect of these changes, said Bogdan, is a cost increase of 2 to 4 percent to the price of each airplane. If sequester-level budgets are enforced by the Congress between 2016 and 2019, 17 fewer U.S. aircraft would be produced.
Anyone who thinks the death spiral hasn't started isn't paying attention.

To hope that Israel buys more of these airplanes is a joke.  The budget isn't there and they still have to figure out maintenance.  Italy is about to slash its buy and Bogdan didn't touch on that.  Additionally Japan has indicated that its going to build its own stealth fighter so that's another miss for the program.

Things are dark and gloomy, the USN is sold on electronic warfare being the future not stealth and this is just the beginning of the bad news.

The Advanced Super Hornet Growler is the workhorse that the Marine Corps needs to make the MAGTF more deadly.  Utilizing the two seat approach to command UAVs, coupled with the airplanes inherent electronic attack that is useful across the spectrum of warfare and you have a combat multiplier extraordinaire (take that Pentagon speakers!) that WILL make the Marine Ground Combat Element more lethal.

Russian combined Airborne & Amphibious Assault...

All photos via English Russia.

I've said it before and will say it again.  The USMC and US Army are missing an opportunity to provide so much deterrence to any aggressive action by China in the Pacific that its mind blowing.  Instead of pushing the dynamic battlefield multiplier of conducting simultaneous Airborne and Amphibious Assault operations on the Battalion/Brigade level or higher (meaning the Marine Expeditionary Unit and the 82nd's Division Ready Brigade), both services are out trying to re-invent the wheel of the Rapid Deployment Forces of the 1980's.

F-35 News. Now we're throwing bullshit against the wall to see what sticks....

via SLDInfo...
A key way to understand the difference between legacy approaches and evolving ones is to contrast a rotocraft enabled ground force with a tiltrotor and fast jet enabled force.
A rotorcraft enabled ground force is operating within the operational box of the rotorcraft range as well as the operating bases to support the operationsof the helicopter. At sea this meant that the USN-USMC team operated within a 200 square mile operational area with a three ship task force.
With the tiltrotor and fast jet combination, the capability to disperse and aggregate force over a much larger area has become a reality. At sea, this has meant that the USN-USMC team can now operate with a disaggregated three ship task force covering more than 1000 miles in operational reach.
The addition of the F-35B will add “tron warfare” capabilities as well as new ISR capabilities to the USMC insertion force as well, and the Marines are preparing for the initial introduction of such capabilities next year.
Read the entire propaganda piece here.

I've tried to be neutral in my stance toward SLDInfo.  I hate the Pentagon speak, and I've become less than impressed with the cheerleading on every issue that supports the F-35, but this latest piece has pushed me over the edge.

I mean seriously?

They're still pushing this SPMAGTF-CR theme and not bothering to fill in the blanks.  They still talk about a 3 ship ARG but don't explain what the Marines on the LPD and LSD will be doing while the MV-22 and F-35 and I would assume the Maritime Raid Force along with the Helo Company are operating off the LHD/LHA doing missions.

Additionally they don't touch on resupply, reinforcement, sustained supporting fires during the entirety of the mission, casualty evacuation etc....

They're simply throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks.

This is a bad idea, a useless concept and is making the Marine Corps a 101st Airborne at sea.

The America people expect more and deserve better from its Marines.

Sidenote:  I laugh at this "wi-fi" connected cloud.  I can build a wi-fi jammer with a quick trip to the local WalMart and I don't even approach average when it comes to electronics.

Sidenote 1:  Will someone PLEASE tell HQMC, SLDInfo and the rest of the Pentagon to drop the terms; shaping, rebalancing, pivoting, new approach, relearning etc...from their talking points.  Its been fashionable for about a year now and its annoying as hell.

The weird MSNBC & Democrat Party gun debate talking points...

via Ammo Land...
During an April 16th 2014 appearance on NBC’s Today show, Bloomberg said:
[Politicians] will vote for whatever they think is in their own self interest to get elected and re-elected. We’ve got to convince them that 80 percent of gun owners… [and] 90 percent of Americans… are in favor of just simple background checks… we’ve got to make them understand that that’s what the public wants and the public’s going to vote that way.
I wonder why Republicans and Gun Rights groups aren't setting the record straight about how the actual gun debate went down last year.

You had the terrible shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary and before the first child had been buried we all got word that Senator Diane Fienstien had dusted off phase two of the Assault Weapons Ban and was trying to get it through Congress.

The President expended MUCH political capitol to make it happen but thankfully, the citizenry was awake and the assault was repelled.

Then just when we all thought we could exhale, that slimy son of a bitch, Senator Joe Manchin, decided to toss his fellow Democrats a bone by pushing a background checks bill.

Do you get the force of connection there?

They failed on their primary objective and then "pivoted" (I'm really starting to hate that word) to the secondary goal of getting ANY gun bill passed.

We didn't fall for it but they're gearing up again.

I hope we're alert 'cause just like zombies, they just won't quit.

Happy Easter!
