Boeing gets serious about lobbying for more Growlers...

In this modern age how do you know when budget wars over weapon systems have switched into high gear?

When the talk switches from what the particular product does and how it benefits the warfighter....to jobs...and the congressional districts where those jobs are located.

I think the military case for the Growler has been made by the CNO.  Made in spades.  Now Boeing is starting the lobbying fight.

'Bout time.

I hope they win.

F-35 News. X-47 heading back to sea for sea trials ....

via NAVAIR
“We are working toward a new set of firsts for the X-47B,” said Matt Funk, X-47B lead test engineer. “We’ll test the new capabilities of the X-47B wing-fold and tailhook retract system, and will demonstrate compatibility with a carrier jet-blast deflector on the flight deck for the first time.”
The proven use of these functions will allow the air vehicle to take off, land, and hold in the same pattern as manned aircraft, the next step toward UAS operations aboard aircraft carriers without disruption to normal carrier flight deck operations, he said.
“This at-sea period will mark the first time manned aircraft and the X-47B will operate together on the flight deck,” Duarte said. The goal is to clear the deck within 90 seconds after landing and demonstrate deck handling on par with manned aircraft.
The Navy will conduct X-47B flight operations over the next year to mature technologies for the future Unmanned Carrier Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike system and refine the concept of operations to demonstrate the integration of unmanned carrier-based aircraft within the carrier environment, Duarte said.
Interesting.

While the F-35 plods along at a snails pace, the UCLASS or UCAV gets ready for its second set of sea trials.

The F-35 hasn't even caught the wire aboard deck yet!

Its beyond obvious.  The X-47 is ready for prime time.

America losing faith in the military...

I told you this would happen,.

You wanted change?  Well this is what it looks like.  You start playing games with the military as a prop, you start using the military as a lab for social experiments...and you remove the bonds between those that are serving with those that have served and you have this.

47% might not seem like a bad number, but this is only the beginning.  The Pentagon is now just another government bureaucracy.  What does that mean for the future?

Budgets will continue to be tight because the people that once carried no longer do.  In 10 years the military will be viewed in the same light as State govt.

You heard it here first.

Botched execution? Not for what this animal did...

Death penalty opponents are all over the botched execution in Oklahoma.  I say the only problem is that the bastard didn't suffer more than he did.  Death by bonfire was called for.  You hear about the messy execution but you don't hear about the crime.  Check this out....
Almost 15 years ago, on June 3, 1999, Clayton Lockett, 23, Shawn Mathis, 26, and Alfonzo LaRon Veasey Lockett, 17, planned on robbing Bobby Lee Bornt, 23, at his house in Perry, Okla.
They tied up Bornt and beat him. Bornt’s nine-month-old son was present.
Stephanie Neiman, 18, was dropping off her friend Summer Bradshaw at that house, and Lockett and his accomplices tried to take the keys to her new Chevy truck. Neiman, who graduated from high school only two weeks earlier, fought back, and the men covered her mouth with duct tape and beat and sexually assualted her. They also covered her 18-year-old friend’s mouth with duct tape, and beat and sexually assaulted her. Both were abducted, along with Bornt and his son. Lockett and his accomplices drove the four people they kidnapped west of Ponca City. Lockett asked Neiman if she planned to call the police. She would not say no, and Mathis spent 20 minutes digging a grave over which Lockett shot Neiman twice with a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun, the three other victims later told authorities.
Read the whole thing here.

You never hear about the victims.  All you hear about is the guys who are wanting one more day of life after committing a horrendous crime.

You can't ignore the victims if you want to have an honest discussion about this issue.  The guy deserved to die.  Nuff said.

Bacon wrapped onion rings....

I gotta try this!  Instruction here.

Basing agreement with the Philippines? What are we getting ourselves into?

via 24 Hour News.
Manila - Heavy clashes have broken out between Philippine troops and Muslim militants trying to regain control of a captured camp in southern Sulu province, leaving 14 Abu Sayyaf rebels and one marine dead, officials said on Wednesday.
Military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala said fighting that began late on Tuesday continued until early morning on Wednesday, with the militants attempting to regain control of an Abu Sayyaf training and storage camp and in Patikul township that was captured by government troops.
Marine representative Captain Ryan Lacuesta, citing intelligence reports, said the clashes left 14 rebels dead, while one marine was killed and 19 were wounded.
Zagala said troops are securing the rebel camp they captured on Monday.

Militants from the group of Abu Sayyaf leader Radullan Sahiron are expected to launch more attacks and the military will continue to use mortars, howitzers and attack helicopters to protect it troops there, he said.

The Abu Sayyaf had links to international militant networks, including al-Qaeda, but a US-backed Philippine military crackdown has weakened it considerably in recent years.

US Army Special Forces might have jacked up the operation in Mali but they did it right in the Philippines.

So why are we establishing bases there?  I'm personally beginning to doubt whether that's such a good idea.  The Philippines have had a low level insurgency which occasionally hits almost all out shooting war for decades now and it is showing no signs of getting better.  Quite honestly its looking like its getting worse.

Deterring China should not include us getting involved in someone else's insurgency which will lead to another NATION BUILDING FIASCO!  The US military wins the war but always loses the nation building part (civilian wishful thinking).  Lets not make that mistake in the PI.

Russian armor is on the move...

English Russia posted these pics of Russian armor on the move (tons of pics too, you should check it out) thru Moscow.  I wonder what the deal is?  From some of the pics it looks like a morning movement (to avoid traffic?) but the sheer size of it is alarming.  Are things finally going to cook off in Ukraine?

New fitness hottie....

Michelle Lewin.  Sizzling hot, physically fit, whats not to like?  Rest of her photos here.

Move over Jaime.  Michelle is SNAFU's new fitness hottie.

Spare parts. How much is enough?

Trying to get a few things done, and I'm organizing the firearms/gear lockers.  What is a decent cache of spare parts for each AR/Glock/AK that you have?

I have absolutely no idea and have looked but can't find a good metric.

Help!

Puppy in training...

Fully mixed X-47 and F/A-18 Super Hornet squadrons are the key to anti-access fight.

The X-47 and Super Hornet in a fully mixed squadron are the keys to the anti-access fight.

Canuck Fighter made a comment that crystallized this for me...but I should have just made a bigger deal of what the Chief Of Naval Operations said.

*  We can have the UCAV act as a missile truck for our manned fighters.  Running out of missiles in an engagement will no longer be a problem.

*  We can have 24 hour orbits over Marines in contact with the enemy.  No more begging for and hoping that Marine Air gets there in time.  It will be there and it won't get tired.

*  Its full stealth so it can go where our manned fighters can't.  Add a couple of Growlers to the mix and enemy air defense don't stand a chance.

The CNO and Canuck Fighter are right.

The answer is already here.  We just need the will to pursue it.

The plane that ate the Canadian military (report)

Its going to cost FAR more than expected.

If the Canadians purchase this airplane then modernization of the rest of there forces is no longer possible.

Read it for yourself below...

China gets the S-400. Defeating anti-access just got harder.

Thanks for the link Matthew!

via The Diplomat
The S-400 itself is likely to significantly enhance Chinese military power in a number of different contingencies. No country will be more affected by China’s S-400 missile systems, which—with a range of 400 kilometers—experts suggest will allow Beijing to achieve air dominance over the Taiwanese strait. York Chen, a former member of Taiwan’s National Security Council, told Defense News last year: “When S-400s work together with Chinese land- and sea-based fighters, the Chinese will have more confidence in sustaining airspace dominance over the Taiwan theater, thus depriving any organized resistance by the Taiwan Air Force and deterring the American intervention.”
While Taiwan is likely to be the most affected by China’s deployment of S-400s, it will not be alone in having to deal with this new capability. Japan also will have to contend with China’s S-400, which are expected to cover the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands. The impact the S-400 system will have on Japan’s ability to project power against China will be mitigated somewhat by Tokyo’s procurement of F-35 fighter jet. The joint strike fighters are built with enough stealth to operate in environments with advanced air defense systems.
Read the entire article but what should be of concern is that the USMC is basing its entire forcible entry capability around vertical assault.

With advanced air defense systems being introduced to the region...what happens when you attempt an assault with MV-22's packed with Marines and you have S-400's firing at long range, you have to dodge Pantsir S-1's at medium range and then MANPADS at the landing zone?

We need to have an adult conversation about how we're going to do forcible entry instead of all the cheer-leading.

Mark Cuban is right about Sterling. Life became more dangerous for us all...

via ESPN
DALLAS -- Mavericks owner Mark Cuban thinks the NBA would be a better league without Donald Sterling in it, but Cuban called the potential scenario of forcing the Los Angeles Clippers owner to sell the team in wake of the racist comments allegedly made by him "a slippery slope."
Cuban was one of several NBA owners to make strong comments about Sterling on Monday, a day before commissioner Adam Silver was scheduled to hold a news conference in New York to announce the league's investigation into the issue.
However, Cuban was the only one to express concern about the precedent that could be set by forcing Sterling to leave the league.
"I think there's a [league] constitution for a reason, right?" Cuban said before Game 4 of the Mavericks-San Antonio Spurs series. "Because this is a very slippery slope. What Donald said was wrong. It was abhorrent. There's no place for racism in the NBA, any business I'm associated with, and I don't want to be associated with people who have that position.
"But at the same time, that's a decision I make. I think you've got to be very, very careful when you start making blanket statements about what people say and think, as opposed to what they do. It's a very, very slippery slope.
Read the whole thing here.

Consider all the conversations that you've ever had that you thought were private.  Think about the blowback if those conversations became public.

Now consider the idea that those ramifications could become enshrined as part of "standard operating procedure" in our society.

Life became even more dangerous for us guys.  Everyone is looking at this as a racial incident.  I see it as a battle between the sexes.  Right now the ladies have just imposed another penalty for us.  No conversation can be considered off limits...even private ones.

Ignore me if you want but pillow talk/an argument with your GF can now be a career killer.  I once told my Marines to talk shit but don't you dare touch her.  Now?  If she's raging just get the fuck out.  Don't give her a chance to get pissed just go see the OOD and get a room in the barracks for the night.  We'll fix it the next day.

War has been declared and chicks are winning.

Brazilian Military enters the slums...and a Brazilian Army General is not happy.

via Defesanet.
The Brazilian Armed Forces were forced to accept his job at the Mare Complex under the direction of the Secretary of Security, due to political marketing that could put public opinion against the Forces. " The need for action in missions Guarantee Law and Order (GLO), in the World Cup, and second several military commands like "ambush" aimed at creating situations critical fact that the military would have to perform in adverse conditions. "1
The Brazilian Armed Forces served as a shill for the police and authorities (Government and Public Safety) state conduct their political propaganda.

Please also note that its an Army General writing this opinion piece.

The Brazilian Military are fully aware of the corrosive effect that comes from being seen as a police force to be used against the local population.  This General seems to be trying to retain the good will of the people despite these orders.

A lesson is to be learned here for the US Military.  All the exercises in cities.  All the teaming with local police forces to teach tactics....all the effort by gear makers to lump the military into the same box as police will lead to very bad, very unintended consequences that will erode the esteem that the public has for the military.

This is a warning for us from Brazil.  I hope we're paying attention.

The focus has returned to light infantry operations and jungle warfare....

"Now, the focus has returned to light infantry operations and jungle warfare" ---Command Sgt. Maj. Ray Devens
The 25th Infantry Division "Jungle Fighters" are back.

I was once really worried about the direction the Army was going.  Quite honestly I thought they were hopelessly lost.

I was wrong.

It seems that a few of them have found their true North and are getting ready for the future.  Read the Army Times article on whats being done to setup that Jungle School (if you don't have a subscription just watch the advertising and they let you through) here.  Well worth your time and quite encouraging.

Sidenote:  I wonder how much gear is going to have to be replaced because it isn't suited to the jungle environment. I'm also curious as to how Hawaii can provide the terrain for a real deal jungle school.  Its been awhile but I don't remember triple canopy terrain anywhere on that place.

US exporting police militarization worldwide....

"If all you have is a hammer then everything starts looking like a nail"
---Law of the instrument

Check out this story from the Herald Sun Australia (pics are from that site).  Notice not only the vehicle used but check out the LEO's.  Then dig through your mental database and compare them to the officers that were active during the Boston Bombing.  Notice something?  They look exactly alike.  The amount of standardization that we're seeing is astonishing.  We don't export as many weapons as we once did so now we're exporting police militarization.

Brazilian armor on parade (various) via Defesanet AgĂȘncia de NotĂcias

Sterling's racist comments. The female issue no one is talking about.

NOTE:  If you go toward the race discussion then its gonna get deleted.  Won't play there.  Just follow along on this different tack I'm trying to take...

Everyone by now has heard about the Sterling comments and the firestorm that's erupted.

What no one is talking about is the background to all this....

The dude's WIFE is suing his girlfriend!

Sloppy!

Can you imagine what its like to be him?  His wife is aware of the trophy girlfriend, she erupts and tells him to call it off.  He does and wifey becomes aware of the gifts so she sues.  Girlfriend gets mad and then decides to destroy the man's reputation in public.

Moral of the story?

Never tell your girlfriend anything in private that you don't want heard in public.  Pillow talk can be a motherfucker!
