Upgunned Bradley 35mm Bushmaster III.

The US Army actually tested a 35mm Bushmaster III Cannon on the Bradley?  Who knew!  Apparently Warfare Technology.  Check out his piece here.

Sidenote:  With the recent interest in 40mm cannons and the inevitable arms race this will produce, you know we're heading back to the future of a past Israeli effort.  A 60mm hyper velocity cannon they tried out on their Sherman's back in the day.

Nigeria is declared Ebola free. UPDATED!!!

UPDATE!  Want a quick kick in the nuts?  Remember how I told you to head over to Shepherd of the Gurney's to get the real deal on Ebola?  Well watch the vid he posted, read his commentary and you'll be shocked straight.  This ain't over folks.

I've been getting bombarded with news that Nigeria is Ebola free.

What everyone is missing is how the Nigerians arrived at this good result.

1.  They declared a quarantine of travel from the affected countries.

2.  They forcibly quarantined any individual that had contact with patient zero.

3.  They acquired extra governmental powers to compel records from every possible source to track down any person that had contact with patient zero...the number totaled over 18,000 people.

Yet even with that a total of 19 people died from that one person.  With air travel still being allowed into the US we can expect additional cases.  Even more startling is the fact that the next infection, if it happens in New York or the North East corridor will have even more people listed as possible contacts.  Are we prepared to interview upwards of 30,000 people?  Are we prepared to treat upwards of 50 people that show signs of infection?

There is a reason why this continues to be an issue.  There is a reason why I don't believe this thing is over.  I recommend you all check out Shepherd of the Gurney's blog to get his opinion of this outbreak.  I don't agree with the clown suit Obama vibe but I do think we have a leader that acts only at the last moment. When it comes to Ebola acting late is a recipe for disaster.

Additional reading.

Sidenote.  Has anyone noticed that the World Health Organization has been as fumbling in its response as the CDC?  Doctor's without Borders are the real heroes here but unlike the WHO they won't seek to claim credit for the positive result in Nigeria.

A spider as big as a puppy? Aw FUCK NO! Shit just got real!

via the BBC.
A new species of venomous tarantula has been discovered - and as spiders go it's pretty big!
The tarantula, named Poecilotheria rajaei, has legs that span 20cm.
It was tracked down in northern Sri Lanka, and it's thought to be one of several new species of tarantula discovered there.

The tarantula family of spider includes one of the world's largest, the Goliath bird-eater.
Habitat under threat
Peter Kirk, Chairman of the British Tarantula Society, told Newsround there are worries about the spiders' habitat.
You may have seen Peter on CBBC's Pet School where he was one of the Extreme Animal Experts.
"The tarantulas of Sri Lanka have been studied in some detail in the past by myself and other arachnologists (spider experts!)" Peter said.
"But we have never been able to visit the north or east of the island because of the civil war that was going on there."
"Now Ranil Nanayakkara - a researcher from Sri Lanka - has done just that. Unfortunately, Ranil has noted that much of this tarantula's natural habitat has been destroyed."
It means the spiders have had to move closer to human homes and villages, he added.
Aw fuck no!

I can deal with snakes.  Once you kill and gut them they taste pretty good.  I can deal with wild dogs.  Alligators.  Hell, Marine Corps lore even talks about Marines having to kill Bengal Tigers that were about to pounce on a Recon Team in the jungles of Vietnam.

But a fucking spider thats as big as a puppy?  Its freaking legs alone are 7 inches?  That shit is from outer space!  I humbly advise the villagers to take up arms and shoot them on sight.

As far as I'm concerned there is only one solution.

S. Korean K-21 Infantry Fighting Vehicle flotation devices vs. Bell's High Speed AAV Concept.

This is probably a repeat but I am fascinated by the solution Korean industry came up with to make the K-21 float.  I seem to remember a similar solution was arrived at early on for the Bradley IFV but was discarded for being somewhat unwieldy.  But I think the real reason why I keep circling back to this is because during the late 70's-early 80's, Bell came up with an LCAC "like" proposal to make the AAV high speed.  Pics follow.  Oh and a sidenote.  They named it "Landing Vehicle Air Cushion".

S. Korean mechanized forces on exercise.

This works to make the IFV float but its the most unusual method I've ever seen.  How this will work in an actual combat situation is anyone's guess but I wonder if this thing can take rifle rounds to its flotation devices....I do know that this type of setup was pitched as a way to make a more heavily armed and faster AAV float back in the 70's but I just don't know.

The real reason why Amos was never respected...

Much has already been written about why General Amos failed in his mission to lead the Marine Corps.

Some say that the turning point was the issue with the Sniper Platoon urinating on the bodies of Taliban scum.  Many couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that its alright to kill these bastards but urinating on their corpses...after knowing that they too have beheaded and hung the bodies of US servicemen from bridge overpasses was allowed.  The Marine Corps community wanted punishment....a slap on the wrist and a don't do it again.  Them "crushed"?  No.

I disagree.

I think its something more primal.

General Amos at the behest of the President did something even more fundamentally evil.

He fucked with the very fabric of the Marine Corps.

For better or worse facts must be faced.  The military in general and the Marine Corps in particular is a conservative organization.  Perhaps in "spirit" only but conservative none-the-less.  Amos attempted (again at the behest of the President) to cause wholesale culture change in the Marine Corps.  No pause was allowed to let each initiative sink in.  Just whirlwind change that threw the Marine Corps off its stride and caused confusion in the ranks.

First up was the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell".  I can tell you for a fact that gay Marines have served in the Marine Corps without problem.  I can tell you for a fact that no "persecution" of them EVER occured.  They were punished at a far lower rate for their "sexual" practices than straight Marines.  But that wasn't good enough.  They threw it front and center in Marine faces.

That was a massive culture change that struck many as wrong.  Pictures of Marines jumping up into the arms of their gay lovers was a step too far.  Marines were told by the SgtMajor of the Marine Corps to shut up and deal with it.  They did but they were pissed.

Next up was the issue with Women in the infantry.  Everyone knows the truth, but unfortunately we don't have people like Colonel Ripley with the moral strength of character to speak the truth on the issue.  Instead we have the politically correct position of simply "accepting" a test to see if it works when we all know the results are pre-ordained.  Marines already know that they will be told to shut up and accept it.

Most will.  And most will punch out of the Marine Corps at the first chance they get...especially since the small community of Marines that are female tend to attract an inordinate amount of problems...mostly not their fault but again its simply a fact.

Now we have Marine leadership attempting to boost the number of female Marines in a force that is down sizing.

It was never about the punishment that he meted out to the Snipers.  It was never about his questionable procurement practices (from the F-35 to the M27 modern day BAR, I vehemently disagree with the majority of them), it was always about his attempt to "transform the Marine Corps...to a liberal institution".

Amos failed because he did not uphold Marine Corps values.  The truth is stark but there you have it.

General Dunford will also fail if he continues down the same road.  It'll take six months for Amos' agenda to wash out and for us to see where Dunford will take us.  Let's hope he chooses well.

Old age and cunning....

Too funny!

On a quick sidenote.  I've never looked at crime statistics but Halloween should be the most dangerous day in America.

People walking around in costumes, faces covered, and no way of making a positive identification?  If I was a criminal I would find the most affluent party I could think of, crash it and rob every person there...if I was a criminal that is.

Izumo class carriers worry China?

pic via Jeff Head's website.

Article via Want China.
Japan's new Izumo-class aircraft carriers will make the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force one of the most lethal offensive forces in the world, reports the Beijing-based China Youth Daily.
The JDS Izumo helicopter carrier has been undergoing intensive sea trials since late September as Japan prepares to launch two Izumo-class destroyers over the next two years, the report said.
Once commissioned, these Izumo-class vessels will greatly enhance Japan's anti-submarine, anti-ship, air combat and amphibious assault capabilities, giving the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force two light aircraft carrier battle groups and two helicopter carrier battle groups.
Izumo-class carriers will boost the Japanese navy in four key respects. First of all, the Izumo-class can potentially double the anti-submarine capabilities of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Currently, Japan's Shirane-class destroyers can carry 9-10 helicopters, compile two anti-submarine crews and carry 16 anti-submarine torpedoes, while its battle groups can equip 42 MK-46 anti-submarine torpedoes and 112 ASROC anti-submarine missiles, which have a range of 11 kilometers and 22 km, respectively.
On the other hand, Izumo-class destroyers can carry 14 helicopters, five anti-submarine crews and 40 anti-submarine torpedoes, with battle groups that can equip 42 MK-46 anti-submarine torpedoes and 104 ASROC anti-submarine missiles.
Second, the Izumo-class can more than double Japan's air combat capabilities. Shirane-class battle groups come equipped with more than 300 SM-2MR, RIM-7 series and RIM-162 ship-to-air missiles with ranges between 16 km and 150 km. By comparison, the Izumo-class destroyer can carry eight F-35 stealth fighter jets and carry 32 AIM-120 mid-long range missiles and 16 short-range missiles. Its battle groups can also equip more than 400 ship-to-air missiles with ranges between 16 km and 150 km.
Third, the Izumo-class can more than triple Japan's anti-ship combat capabilities. The Shirane-class destroyer can carry 56 Harpoon or Type 90 ship-to-ship missiles which have a range between 90 km and 200 km. But with up to eight F-35 fighters on board, the Izumo-class can carry as many as 48 Norwegian-made naval strike missiles, extending its anti-ship combat radius to 640 km. At the same time, Izumo-class battle groups can also carry more than 50 Harpoon or Type 90 ship-to-ship missiles.
Fourth, the Izumo-class destroyer will lead to a dramatic surge in Japan's remote delivery and amphibious combat capabilities. At the moment, Japan's three Oosumi-class landing ships can be loaded with 990 marine officers, six landing craft and 30 tanks. Each Izumo-class carrier, on the other hand, can carry 500 soldiers and multiple helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft, with a deck that can cater to five helicopters or MV-22 Ospreys landing or taking off simultaneously. Two Izumo-class vessels will be able to transport 1,000 soldiers to the frontline while also strengthening defense and invasion capabilities.
That's a whole lot of worry when we consider that the Izumo is actually just a big deck amphib.

It seems more and more obvious that Japan is the counter to Chinese aggression in that area.

Perhaps we should tailor our defense of that region with the idea that Japan and Australia will be our only "reliable" partners in the area.  That isn't to say that Singapore, S. Korea, the Philippines and others aren't valuable...its just that their assistance will probably come with many more strings attached, and be tailored toward their own defense and not mutual assistance.

101st Airborne to Africa. Modern day charge of the light brigade.

Thanks for the link Neal.

via The Gateway Pundit.
The administration says they won’t need them.
Nashville Public Radio reported:

Troops from the 101st Airborne Division leading the military response to Ebola in West Africa will only need gloves and masks to protect themselves from the deadly virus, so said Gen. David Rodriguez at a Pentagon briefing Wednesday.
“They don’t need the whole suit – as such – because they’re not going to be in contact with any of the people,” the commander of U.S. troops in Africa said.

Soldiers from the 101st Airborne will primarily be building hospitals, ultimately leading what could be a contingent of 4,000 American service members. They’ll be housed either in tent cities at military airfields or in Liberian Ministry of Defense facilities, Rodriguez said.
Soldiers’ health will be monitored through surveys and taking their temperature on their way in and out of camps. If a service member does get sick, Rodriguez said they will be flown home immediately for treatment.
I've looked at the goals being established for the 101st Airborne on their deployment to Africa.

First just head over to the Shepherd of the Gurney's place and read about the real "Ebola".  Next consider the fact that they're hoping to have in place by December, 1700 treatment beds...and I believe 10 isolation wards.

That wouldn't help with what they're facing now, much less by December.

We're sending a US Army Brigade and I predict soon a division, into Africa to deal with an outbreak that is already out of control.  This isn't going to work as currently designed.  This is a public relations move at best.

The question that everyone should ask?  What happens if this strikes New York..a city with a large population from Liberia?  Dallas is one thing.  The city is car mobile, dispersed etc...New York?  Crowded, relying on mass transit, extremely dense with large crowds---everywhere.  Contact with other peoples bodily fluids is a given in that type of situation.

Many are acting as if this is over.  I'm not so sure.

Ukraine continues to meltdown while we're distracted.

Thanks to Per Holmgaard for the link.

The Donetsk International Airport is getting savaged.  If this is what peace looks like then they might be better off with full scale combat.  I have to admit it.  I've seen the news about continued fighting in Ukraine.  I've seen the reports that Putin is promising retribution for the economic sanctions being placed upon him (ironically those same sanctions appear to be hitting Germany just as hard...thereby forcing the EU into recession).  But I've instead concentrated on ISIS, Ebola, and the change of command of the Marine Corps.

That might have been a mistake.  The US, EU, UN and everyone else has placed Ukraine on the back burner because it was too hard to solve.  If this keeps up it'll be front and center again.

Russian sub in trouble off the coast of Sweden?

Thanks to David for the links.

I can't get too excited about this because I don't view it as a military action but as a rescue operation...The type of operation that all nations should participate in, if allowed by the nation whose sub went down that is.  We send subs to all parts of the globe to conduct missions against friends and allies alike.  So do our friends, allies and enemies.  When a sub is in distress its time to put away the diplomatic insanity and simply rescue the crew, scuttle the boat and be done with it.

Their sub today but eventually its going to be one of ours.

Read about the drama here and here.

Blast from the past. Power-Augmented Ram Landing Craft (PARLAC)

An artist's concept of a power-augmented ram landing craft (PARLAC) offloading amphibious tractors (LVT) onto a beach. The PARLAC, which has the capability of achieving high speeds and has good shore-landing capability, presently in the testing stages of research and development.
If you have any information on this concept please send it my way.  Update...Alacran found an additional pic.  Thanks!

Peru buying Mig-35's?

via Defesanet AgĂȘncia de NotĂcias
Russia plans to export new-generation fighters to Peru (Russian Gazette) Peru air force should change the Soviet MiG-29 by the modern MiG-35. Although military experts believe in the potential of the aircraft, the MiG-35 is not in the service of the Russian Armed Forces and this prevents promotion abroad.
Interesting.  The choice is curious.  My best guess?  Peru is cost conscious and I'm betting that the Russians are selling the Mig at a great price just to get it into service somewhere.  Additionally since its apparently well regarded by the aviation community it would appear to "over match" everything currently flying and will (in Peru's opinion) hopefully match (at least) aircraft coming into service into the future.  This bears watching.  The arms race in S. America is being ignored by many but so many arms with so many rivalries can't be a good thing.

Police have settled on "rescue vehicle" to justify the purchase of MRAPs.

via The Norman Transcript.
Capt. Todd Gibson presented information about armored rescue vehicles to the Citizens Public Safety Oversight Committee last week to talk about just that. The vehicle would be used for transporting police, fire, medics or transport individuals through hostile areas.
"This piece of equipment would allow us to get into active shooter areas. It would allow us to get into IED areas, if they were to occur on a game day," he said. "Anywhere you have large concentrations of people, you have large concerns that bad people can do bad things."
OU football home games bring about 80,000 plus people into the city, he said.
While there is a current stigma that comes along with an armored vehicle, such as the militarization of police departments, Gibson said the vehicle the department is looking at is more like a Ford F-550 Super Duty pickup or armored ambulance.
"One thing that it is not, and I stress this, NOT; it is not a tank. It has no offensive capabilities," he said. "It's clearly a rescue vehicle."
Both Oklahoma City and Edmond have armored rescue vehicles and the vehicles are often found in airports or used in construction. Gibson said the vehicles are nothing new, they're just advanced.
"It's nothing new, nothing crazy, not a weapon, not a tank. It's simply preparation," he said. "By failing to prepare we are preparing to fail."
Chief Keith Humphrey was offered a Medium Range Anti Tank (MRAT) for a price much cheaper than an armored rescue vehicle would cost, Gibson said, but declined it because he didn't believe it fit our community needs.
I have a web alert that hits articles that cover armored vehicles and every night I get bombarded with articles of police depts seeking to/or buy/ing MRAPs.

One thing I've noticed since the issue of police militarization hit hard (right after Ferguson when the news media finally noticed SWAT Teams looking like a Marine Corps Rifle Squad) is that law enforcement has really begun pushing the "rescue vehicle" meme.

What I hadn't read or heard is the idea that police actually thought that they might face IEDs.

It is definitely time to try get a hold of a few of those alerts that DHS sends to local PDs with regard to potential threats....if Capt Gibson actually believes that he could face IEDs in Norman, Oklahoma then things are worse than I thought.

U.S. Soldiers Receive Just Four Hours of Ebola Training Before Deployment

this photo is NOT associated with the story...i just thought it was funny.

via Washington Free Beacon.
U.S. soldiers preparing for deployment to Africa to combat Ebola are only given four hours of Ebola-related training, the Daily Beast reports.
Soldiers preparing for deployment to West Africa are given just four hours of Ebola-related training before leaving to combat the epidemic. And the first 500 soldiers to arrive have been holing up in Liberian hotels and government facilities while the military builds longer-term infrastructure on the ground. […]
The training process sounds daunting: One USA Today report described soldiers being told that Ebola “basically causes your body to eat itself from the inside out” and that Ebola is “worse” than what soldiers encountered in Afghanistan. Others reportedly heard that the disease is “catastrophic” and “frightening… with a high fatality rate,” though the chances of contracting it are low.
“I’ll be honest with you,” one soldier told the newspaper. “I’m kind of scared.”
That's a smart troop.  He should be scared.  One thing has become obvious to me.  Despite what my friend William says, this whole thing is being done to protect the global economy.

If the US bans flights then so will others.

That will lead to a domino effect and the general public is already becoming alarmed...right before the Christmas shopping season.
