Think Defence Blog is at the Acceptance Stage w/regard to decreased UK defense spending...

via Think Defence...
I enjoy talking about defence priorities as much as the next man but a couple of nights ago I thought maybe we should stop arguing about slivers of a percentage point get back to some first principles and think out aloud whether the UK would actually benefit from less defence spending than more or even the same.
Now this might seem completely insane in light of the current belligerence from Russian and Islamic civil war across large parts of the Middle East and Africa but what threats do they actually pose, I mean really. What would be lost because of a perceived lack of prestige and influence derived from our world famous fifth largest defence budget in the world?
If we look back at what advantages accrued from our involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq it is hard to put a great deal of value in the benefits column, the costs are pretty clear and service personnel and their families will be paying the price for decades to come. It might be easy to be wise after the event but looking back is supposed to support the learning of lessons. Keeping ones noses out of other peoples business might seem like some to be moral cowardice but others might see the same as prudent, wise and considered behaviour.
I think we can easily say that TD is at the acceptance stage of the Kubler-Ross model of grieving.

But what does this mean for US policy?

Easy.

I'm tired of us paying the bill so that others can slash their defenses.  If Think Defense wants to blame the US for its internal woes with regard to its defense spending then awesome.

The US response should be to close every base in that soggy country, exclude them from our nuclear trident program, bar them from using our cruise missiles and let them bow out of the F-35 program (I especially like the last one).

I mean seriously...the French don't even whine as much as the Brits do these days.

Let's just ease their pain and our own and be happy for the past partnerships and head in different directions.

24th MEU's message to its FaceBook fans...

Thank God for the Marine Expeditionary Units!  Do you want to see Marines that still get it?  Look no further than the MEU's (uh not the Navy side...I'm still reeling from that LtCmdr leading a yoga exercise...and who authorized that PT gear...I actually saw a squid in some kinda pinkish v-neck top -- I won't call it a shirt---and tights...click here...he's in the bottom right corner..)

Do you camp? Check out this house in a trailer!

All pics via Australia 4WD Action.

Well its virtually a "house" in a trailer.

I wonder if this has any military applications?  I still wonder about those SPMAGTF-CR's but if you could build a command center that was tow-able by an ITV then you'd be cooking with gas (assuming that the trailer is MV-22 transportable).

The US is being assaulted by new/old types of illnesses.

via NPR
This time last year, a painful new virus was knocking on our doorstep. Travelers were bringing chikungunya to the U.S. And eventually, the mosquito-borne virus set up shop in Florida.
Now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says another nasty pathogen is hitching a ride to the U.S. with travelers: multidrug-resistant Shigella.
Read it here.

Crampy rectal pain? No thank you!  Vomiting? Ok...I don't like it but its standard fare for food poisoning.

Bloody or MUCUS laced diarrhea?

AH HELL NO!

Does it seem like the US is the target of a sustained biological attack?  Measles out of no where.  The disease that was attacking and killing children from the crib to about 16.  Ebola.  And now this?

Strong borders do more than keep out illegals.

Strong borders safeguard the health of a nation.

This makes me ask "why God"...

via Daily Mirror
A brave teenager who defied one of the world's rarest genetic conditions has passed away at the age of 17.
Hayley Okines, who had the premature ageing disease progeria, was told she would not live past the age of 13.But she pushed on with life courageously and at the age of 14 published her autobiography, called Old Before my Time.
However, despite pioneering drug treatment in the US that gave her a new lease of life, she was unable to conquer the disease.
Her mother Kerry Okines posted on Facebook tonight: "My baby girl has gone somewhere better. She took her last breath in my arms at 9.39pm x."
I look at madmen like the German airplane pilot, beasts in Nigeria killing Christians, savages in ISIS doing the same, despots in Iran and at least the blame can laid at the feet of man.

If our society had any fortitude we could solve those problems in a couple of years.

But this disease?

Why God?

Rest in peace little girl.

Quick Hit. The Nuke Deal "probably will fail talk" was just a psyops campaign...

Everyone got played.

I followed the news on the Iranian nuke talks closely.  I was monitoring tv news, State Dept tweets, John Kerry tweets, trending topics etc...

I watched CNN, Fox News and MSNBC so that I could get a conservative, liberal and MORE liberal view of things.

We all were told that the talks were breaking down and things didn't look good.

Then suddenly, out of no where we get news that they've arrived at a tough "historic" deal?

Bullshit.

They played everyone.  Froze the field.  They achieved their mission.  No one was ready when the deal was announced and now the White House has the stage to itself for Fri, Sat and Sun before opponents of the deal can gather themselves and point out the faults of the thing.

They did an old fashioned psyops game on us and we fell for it.

THE REALLY SAD PART?  We shouldn't be played by our own govt.

Hardcore Navy PT!

OH MY GOD!

Don't laugh.  Don't make a joke.  The new American military.  They might not win on the battlefield but they can "Yoga" their ass off!

Is the Greek economic crisis the end of NATO...

Peter at Bayou Man Blog has been on it lately.  Check this out...
Greece could not plausibly remain in Nato if ejected from EMU in acrimonious circumstances. It would drift into the Russian orbit, where Hungary’s Viktor Orban already lies. The southeastern flank of Europe’s security system would fall apart.
. . .
Mr Tsipras is now playing the Russian card with an icy ruthlessness, more or less threatening to veto fresh EU measures against the Kremlin as the old set expires. “We disagree with sanctions. The new European security architecture must include Russia,” he told the TASS news agency.
He offered to turn Greece into a strategic bridge, linking the two Orthodox nations. “Russian-Greek relations have very deep roots in history,” he said, hitting all the right notes before his trip to Moscow next week.
Read the whole thing at his house.

We're potentially looking at the collapse of the EU...or at least a major restructuring...and the destruction of NATO as we know it?  Consider what a Russian naval base or basing rights for their airplanes on the southern tip of Europe would mean for the alliance!

Putin isn't even trying any more.  Destiny is lining up for him now.

Op Inherent Resolve Damage Tally...

Excuse me if I'm not impressed.

Coalition airpower has been at this for how many months and this is what they've done?  More work was put in on the first night of Desert Storm than what we're seeing here!

Is it restrictive rules of engagement?  Maybe bad intel?  The coalition structure itself?

What has me wondering aloud is the fact that only 75 tanks have been destroyed.  Are they including IFVs and APCs in the tank total?  If so then its even more depressing.

US defense budget a mess? Check out what the Brits are about to do~!

via UK Armed Forces Commentary.
Not the Tories nor Labour are giving assurances about maintaining the 2% line, and they aren't even giving real assurances about sticking at least to a flat in-real-terms budget with a 1% increase on equipment spending, which is the absolute minimum level of spending the MOD was promised when Future Force 2020 was devised. With the extremely significant caveat, by the way, that the flat-in-real-terms budget has to be calculated, of course, starting from a base amount. And the base MOD budget has been falling significantly each year since 2010. Depending on which fiscal year serves as base for the calculation, the budget over five years changes by several billion pounds.
Even worse, there seem to be almost certainty that there will be new, vast cuts to the budget. Something that, inexorably, would entirely wreck Future Force 2020, changing yet once more the plans, imposing new cuts even before the last ones are completed. And putting a very big nail in the coffin of Britain's role as a military power. If not the final nail, close to it.
Read it here.

Paralus has been talking about this in the comments for months now.  The Brits and Germans are acting as if they live on a different planet and their defense budgets show it!

The Brits will no longer be credible defense partners in the future.  They're putting all their eggs in the economic power found in London.  Its feeble, weak and bound to fail but that's where their future clout will lie.

How are the Iranian talks going? They're running rings around the US...

They're running rings around us.

Is it because Obama wanted a legacy item?  Kerry wanting a legacy item after he failed so completely for a Middle East peace deal?

Amazing!

Our future is being determined because of the arrogance of two people...not the needs of our nation or the region.

Don't trust me. DO THINK!

via American Mercenary.
The critic just has to inspire doubt in his target audience.
"Why are they backpeddling now?" or "Why didn't they hold a press release before we started raising a stink?" or "How do you think this would have turned out if we hadn't raised public awareness to this threat on our liberty and freedom?"
There are absolutely no facts there. Each statement is a logical fallacy in its own right, "begging the question" and designed only to inspire doubt. This isn't "reasoning", this is a "reasoning noise."
All communications are based on trust. Face to face, over the internet, telephone, or smoke signal, all communications are based on trust.
If you can "poison the well" and plant the seeds of doubt to destroy that trust, you can put a serious kink in operations.
Read it all here.

AM is using this post as a defense of Jade Helm 15, but the way that he is framing his argument, it would stifle criticism of any military project or exercise anywhere.  This passage (and the one above) stand out...
I can't prove to anyone that Jade Helm 2015 isn't a "preparation for marshal law." I can't prove a negative. I can't prove that something really isn't something else.
Never once have I said that Jade Helm 15 is preparation for marshal law.  NOT ONCE!  I have said that its stupid.  I have said that there are more than enough training areas on military installations to make the need to go into US cities bullshit.  But I've never said it was about marshal law (I think I DID say it was about SOCOM putting on their cool boy shades and getting some good PR).

But bottle all that up and put it aside.

His attack on critics is obscene.  If you ask people to consider contrary opinions, to dig deep into information provided by manufacturers and the government...if you question authority then suddenly all you're doing is poisoning the well?  But this last part has me PUNCHING WALLS!
If you read something and get angry, you need to ask yourself why you are angry. You need to find out if someone is manipulating you by your anger. If you read something and agree with it 100%, then either you are amazingly in sync or you are buying someone's bullshit. Either way you aren't engaging your intelligence to analyze the situation and seek truth. But you'll have to trust me on that. And that is the truth.
Wow.

Trust him?  I don't know him!  I reference his material when I agree but to trust a person I've never laid eyeballs on?

BULLSHIT!

Here at SNAFU!  we don't ask you to trust us, we do ask you to think!  I depend on readers to help me keep up with events all over the world.  From tech to conflicts, one guy can't do it all.  Additionally I don't have experience, knowledge etc...on many issues that we cover everyday.  The opinion of my readers, research that I do on my own...and yeah...my gut...helps me decide which course of action is correct.

But as a blogger I will never ask you to "trust" me. That's arrogant beyond belief.  You "trust" family, friends, but a blogger?  Really?  Seriously?  American Mercenary asks you to trust today...will he ask you on behalf of others to kneel tomorrow?

US Army 2nd Cav "Dragoon Ride" meets protesters in Germany....

Read the story here.

You just saw every US military stereotype of Europe on this ride.  Former Soviet Union sat states love us, want us in their countries and "old Europe" wants us out.

Is this the DoD providing cover for Jade Helm 15?

The Defense Department is working with FEMA to bolster U.S. preparedness for hazards of all types to strengthen our collective security, resilience and readiness.

What you see above is a page on the DoD website promoting the "Prepareathon" (check it out here).

But I have to wonder.

Is this an attempt by the DoD to "mastery the human terrain" and get a bit of positive publicity out to the masses since their announcement of Jade Helm 15 is recognized for what it is by people who have an idea of military operations and aren't staff weenies bucking for a seat at the table in DC?

I don't know but I don't recall a DoD wide effort like this.  At individual bases you have local commanders prepping for local issues.  Camp Lejeune, you go over hurricane preparedness.  29 Palms, its earthquakes.  Australia?  Probably all the animals that want to kill you.  But DoD wide and teaming with FEMA?

I see a psyops campaign being launched.

Hell!  Maybe this is part of Jade Helm 15 as a shaping public opinion exercise!

New Crime Tactic

via Bayou Man...
I've warned before that Mexican drug cartels and their tactics were spreading to this country. The cartel presence in major cities is by now well documented. Now it seems that their criminal tactics are being used as well - at least in Chicago, so far, and presumably soon in other cities too.

A group of robbers on the south side of Chicago appear to have taken a page out of the Gulf Cartel or Los Zetas manual for setting up roadblocks in order to carry out violent robberies. Just last week a group of three or four robbers have used a construction area in the city’s south side to set up roadblocks as a trap for motorists.
Once the motorists stop, they were assaulted and robbed, UPI newsreported.

The practice bears a striking similarity to a practice already established by both the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas who set up roadblocks around Mexican border cities to keep their enemies out or to rob unsuspecting motorists.

There's more at the link.
I've warned about being prepared for multiple assailants.  This just confirms it.

BREAKING! V-22 and SPMAGTF-CR proving concepts for Marine Corps Future Force (MCFF)

You like the idea of Orbital Dropship Troopers?

Well HQMC isn't reaching for the stars but they are looking at global reach for the Marine Corps Future Force Concept (MCFF).

While I've been a harsh critic of the SPMAGTF-CR, I've been given the slides (they'll be up shortly) that show the Marine Rifle Companies being inserted at long range by MV-22 as being nothing but a proof of concept demonstration for a more ambitious project.

Remember the Rail Guns that the Navy is working on?  How about the UCAS that is stealthy and can remain airborne for a day or longer and operate off carriers?

The future will hold an enlarged MV-22 (moving up to just under C-130 size) inserting augmented MCFF units up to 2000 miles away and being supported by Naval Integrated Fires Complex even at that great distance.  Don't think F-35 providing the support but instead UCAS, Railguns, Cruise Missiles and Advanced Spectre Gunships based on C-17's.

As soon as I get clearance I'll post the powerpoint and slide show.  The Marine Corps just stumbled onto another battlefield innovation.  I hate the term because its over used, but this really is a GAME CHANGER!

NOTE:  Yeah.  Its an April Fool's thing.  I had to have a little fun with you guys!

This looks bad for NYPD...

I would really love to know what made the guy go off.

Iran has the equivalent of two Marine Expeditionary Brigades in Iraq?

via Defense 24.
Currently, it is estimated that Iraq is now about 30,000 Iranian "advisers" military and Shiite militias, representing 2/3 of military force in the final offensive in the Sunni province of Salahaddin, are closely associated with the Iranian Pasdaran and General. Qasem Sulejmani, one of the major formation commanders. Also in Lebanon, Hezbollah's position began to grow, after the country at last. r. plunged into a political crisis and became the target of an Islamic state and al Nusra Front of land neighboring Syria.
Read the entire "op ed" type piece here.

Note:  A Marine Expeditionary Brigade is a combined arms force comprised of 14,500 Marines complete with an air, ground, and logistics component.  It is a self contained force that can operate across the COMPLETE spectrum of operations.  No other force on the planet is able to replicate this capability.

If this is true then we're seeing the calm before the storm.  You can bet that Israel will soon be attacked, there is no hope of deposing the Syrian President and that the rest of the Middle East will HAVE to get involved to guarantee national survival.

In the future the nuke negotiations will look like the US fiddled while the Middle East burned.
